Switzerland should develop an anti-corruption strategy, according to a Council of Europe committee.
The Group of States Against Corruption published on Monday its first evaluation report on Switzerland, made public with the agreement of the federal authorities.
The report praised Swiss efforts since 2000 to prevent, detect and punish corruption. However it said that more needed to be done in connection, for example, with public procurement and tendering, and the issuing of permits, authorisations and licences.
The committee said that Switzerland’s highly decentralised structure meant a strengthening of dialogue between institutions was necessary, in particular to determine what the challenges, available resources and objectives were.
Altogether the council committee has proposed 13 measures. Switzerland is supposed to say how it will implement them by October 2009. Switzerland has been a member of the committee since 2006.
